His Highness Tunku Mukhriz should be the Yamtuan a long time ago. His father was the previous king and Almarhum Tunku Jaafar should only be the pemangku. Perhaps he was overstaying? I can't help noticing how relieved Tunku Mukhriz was when the announcement was made. Congratulations to the Undangs for the making right decision.

You've got it right after all! Very few thought it was going to be Muhriz.

Let's hope he brings back the greatness and integrity of my nenek's datuk Lerap (pronounced Lay-ghap) who fled Sri Menanti to live in Lubok China in Melaka because of the infighting back home then.

Like most of the rakyat, I too am happy that none of the late YDP's princes got to be the next YDP.

We're sick and tired of seeing them in the Tattler and High Society magazines and their very social la-di-da functions. Good riddance!

I hope Tunku Mukhriz will bring some semblance of dignity and honour back to the Negeri Sembilan royalty.

I am puzzled with some comments made (Wikipedia's for example) which stated that Tunku Muhriz's non-appointment as Yang Di-Pertuan Besar in 1967 was due to Tunku Abdul Rahman's (the first Malaysian Prime Minister)influence over the Undangs. It was said that Tunku Muhriz's non-appointment was due to his young age. I am privy to some information regarding this.

The fact was, the Undangs did not appoint him because there was a time when Tunku Muhriz showed some disrespect to the Undangs (maybe due to his immaturity) by some of the comments that he made in the Istana, which was reported to the Undangs. It was reported that he shot some cows that belonged to the villagers nearby, when these cows entered the Istana's compound. The Undangs concluded that if he could behave like this when he was not a Yang Di-Pertuan Besar, imagine how he would behave if he were the Yang Di-Pertuan Besar.

Had the then Prime Minister of Malaysia (YTM Almarhum Tunku Abdul Rahman)backed the decision by the Undangs, the late Datuk Klana Petra Mohd Kassim (the then Undang Luak Sungei Ujong)would not have been so afraid that he left the country to go to Tokyo. He was supposed to make the proclamation of the new Yang Di-Pertuan Besar, but due to his absence, the proclamation was made by the YTM Undang Luak Jelebu, flanked by YTM Undang Luak Johol and YTM Undang Luak Rembau.

But I am so glad that the present batches of YTM Undangs chose Tunku Muhriz as the new Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. He has been protected from the glamorous circles that the members of the previous ruling family have been so accustomed to. The princes had not been close to the rakyat but were so busy with their own circles of rich and glamorous.

The rakyat of Negeri Sembilan had been observing and the Undangs have been sensitive to the feelings of the rakyat. Let's hope that Tuanku Muhriz would be a just and fair Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.

Please be informed that the term Ruler in Negeri Sembilan does not only refer to the Yang Di-Pertuan Besar. The term Ruler in Negeri Sembilan refers to six persons, namely The Yang DiPertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, the four Undangs (Undang Luak Sungei Ujong, Jelebu, Johol and Rembau)and the Tunku Besar of Tampin.

Article 71 (1) and (2) of the Federal Constituion states that:-

"(1)The Federation shall guarantee the right of a Ruler of a State to succeed and to hold, enjoy and exercise the constitutional rights and privileges of Ruler of that State in accordance with the Constitution of that State; but any dispute as to the title to the succession as Ruler of any State shall be determined solely by such authorities and in such manner as may be provided by the Constitution of that State.

(2)Clause (1) shall with the necessary modifications, apply in relation to a Ruling Chief of Negeri Sembilan as it applies to the Ruler of a State."

Let us also hope that the sons of Tuanku Muhriz would also learn from the experience of their father and that they must observe good moral conduct and not let their status go their heads lest the Undangs might be forced to elect someone with good moral behaviour to replace their father as the next Yang Di-Pertuan Besar.

But in the mean time... Daulat Tuanku!!!

FYI in negeri sembilan, there is no such thing as rightful heir to the throne. While it is a custom to appoint the son of the late ruler to the throne, the final decision will always be the prerogative of the four 'undangs'. This is not 'adat temenggung', this is 'adat perpatih'.

In the recent process of choosing the Yang Di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan, the four Undangs actually demonstrated their powers in such a task. According to Negeri Sembilan State Constitution, Chapter 3 clearly states that:-

"Upon the death of a Yang Dipertuan Besar, leaving male issue him surviving, the Undangs of the territories of Sungei Ujong, Jelebu, Johol and Rembau shall forthwith choose a successor from among the said male issue:

Provided that if, in the opinion of the said Undangs, there is no suitable and competent person among the said male issue, then a person shall be chosen from the first of the following classes or failing, in their opinion, any suitable and competent person in that class, then from the second and subsequent classes in the order stated, that is to say-

Firstly, the brothers of the deceased Yang Dipertuan Besar;

Secondly, the paternal uncles of the deceased Yang Dipertuan Besar;

Thirdly, the grandsons of the deceased Yang Dipertuan Besar;

Fourthly, the sons and brothers of the deceased Yang Dipertuan Besar;

Fifthly, the sons of the paternal uncles of the deceased Yang Dipertuan Besar.

When the Undangs chose Tunku Muhriz, he actually falls under the fourth class, i.e. the sons of the brothers of the deceased Yang Dipertuan Besar, eventhough, in 1967 he was the only male issue surviving, which made him the first choice then.

But who is to question the Undangs of their choice? What matters is that in the opinion of the Undangs, the person they chose is the one most suitable to be the next Yang Dipertuan Besar at that time. Whatever their decision, they do not have to explain their decision. Like what we are witnessing a few days ago.

The three Tunku Laxamana, Tunku Muda Serting and Tunku Panglima Besar were the surviving male issue, (therefore the first choices) but they were deemed not suitable by the Undangs. Neither were the first, second and third classes.

But I believe the Undangs have made the right decision. May Tuanku Muhriz prove to be the rightful choice for the rakyat of Negeri Sembilan. DAULAT TUANKU!!!

Firstly I would like to thank Allah for His greatness returning the Royal Throne of Negeri Sembilan to the right respective heir, as in Bahasa Melayu, "pulang kepada yang berhak". As a citizen of Negeri Sembilan, I do hope Duli Tuanku Mukhriz will crumble down the existing barrier and gap between "Raja and rakyat" and be the genuine "Raja berjiwa rakyat". I also hope that the royal family of Tuanku Mukhriz will be humble, friendly and close to the 'rakyat' as we, the citizen of Negeri Sembilan vow to give our loyalty and full support to Tuanku and family. We hope to see a good change in near future. Lastly, I would also like to congratulate the 4 respective Undang for being precised in making their decision.
May Allah SWT bless Tuanku Mukhriz.....

I heard initially, only the Undang from Sungai Ujong favored Tunku Mukriz and the rest of the Undangs favored Tunku Naqiyuddin. But somehow, the Undang from Sungai Ujong (due to his seniority - I am not sure in age or in post) managed to convince the other undangs to choose Tunku Mukhriz.

Whatever,kudos to the Undangs for choosing Tunku Mukhriz. I heard the new YTM is down to earth person and would not hesitate to eat with the rakyat at any warong.

I heard differently. While it's true that YTM Undang Sungei Ujong backed Tuanku Muhriz, YTM Undang Rembau also shared his opinion. YTM Undang Jelebu was more of a fence sitter and YTM Undang Johol (being new) readily agreed with whatever decision that his bretheren Undangs decide.

Now, it seems that a "war" is brewing with Tunku Laxamana's PRO questioning the legitimacy of YTM Undang Sungei Ujong. It's true that for umpteen years the position of Undang Sungei Ujong was vacant until the present YTM Dato' Klana Petra Mubarak Dohak was chosen to fill the position. A decision forced to be made by the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang due to the inability of the parties within Sungei Ujong to settle the matter.

It was rumored that the position was left vacant for so many years by in-fightings within Luak Sungei Ujong caused by "outside interferences", i.e. royal and political. Now, these people are playing the game again; trying to oust YTM Undang Sungei Ujong and thus questioning the legitimacy of the proclamation of Tuanku Muhriz as the Yang Dipertuan Besar.

To these people, let me warn you. Do not raise the anger of the rakyat of Negeri Sembilan due to your selfish interests, be it royal or political. The Undangs have done their job well. There were initial fears that the Undangs might be bribed but they have proved otherwise.

For your information, it has always been the case in Negeri Sembilan, protocol-wise, that the order of the Undangs start with Sungei Ujong, followed by Jelebu, Johol and Rembau. It was not due to seniority in age or position as all the Undangs enjoy the same authority and priviliges within their Luak. Only at State level, that the order mentioned above is followed. In their own Luak, the respective Undang is ranked higher in terms of protocol, just like the Sultans in their own home states.

This order was set-up by the British this way because Sungei Ujong was the first among the four Luaks to join the newly-formed Negeri Sembilan, followed by Jelebu, Johol and Rembau. Rembau was known to be rebellious against the British and was the last to be "persuaded" to join the State.

In terms of seniority of holding their current positions, the Undang Jelebu is the most senior, followed by Sungei Ujong, Rembau and Johol in that order. In terms of age, Undang Jelebu is the eldest. I am not sure about the rest.

Negeri Sembilan has such a beautiful system. Do not ruin it.

We rakyat of Negeri Sembilan have observed the NS royals for a very long time. As MOST of the NS citizens nowadays are educated, which means, we know how to differentiate, make conclusions and are very-very aware of our rights, so....please DO NOT make a fool of us and NEVER-NEVER challenge the 'voice of rakyat'. We are happy and grateful with the choice made by the 4 undangs. The cow shooting incident was lead by immaturity (as during that time Tuanku Mukhriz was more or less about 18 years old), but now, we trust Tuanku Mukhriz is matured and wise enough to be a ruler. Therefore, without any doubt, we are giving our full loyalty to DYMM Tuanku Mukhriz and family. We believe Tuanku will bring a good change which is desperately needed! A BIG thank you to the 4 undang for their braveness in making the RIGHT decision. Daulat Tuanku, Daulat Tuanku, Daulat Tuanku!

...And whoever gave the idea that the successor be selected from the pool of the so-called 'four princes'- Mukhriz, Bill, Pete and Paddy?. Here is a sneaky attempt to split the votes to increase the chances for one of the 'three Jaafar boys' to succeed the throne! Being so thick-skinned they never give up, do they? Unfortunately for them the Undangs were not that dumb. Now, now, stop messing with the Luak Sungei Ujong issue!Respect the Rakyat. We DID FOR 41 YEARS.

I was a Jelebu boy...The royal highness Undang of Jelebu was my former headmaster which was Sekolah Menengah Undang Jelebu.

His son Reza and I were school mates. The royal highness Undang of Jelebu, Musa Wahab was a very wise man even when he was the head master back then. I had alot of respect for him and I have met him in my capacity as the Scouts Chief of the school.

I believe he being the most senior Undang by seniority, has made a wise choice.

Daulat Tuanku! Daulat Tuanku! Daulat Tuanku!

I read this Paddy Bowie (orang putih makan belacan barua ni) describing how she missed the NS royalty good old days elitism, snobbiness, Un-Minangkabau behaviour. I know the whole family of Jaafar do not reflect or show any Malayness or Minangkabauness and they are very detached from the rakyat. They love drinking and partying.
This pundek Paddy reminisced of the "good" old days. How Carl was treated blah, blah! I now know for sure Muhriz will change all that!
Good session we had the other night with you Pasq! One of the younger one fancy you! He he!
BTW I hope Muhriz will treat Yaakov well, he was never accepted by Jaafar's sibling!
